Book Launch: ‘Sculpting Type, An Introduction to cnc Typography’

Date & Venue: 7 June 2013, at the GR-ID Museum (the Graphic Ideas Museum), Rabenhauptstraat 65, 9725 CC Groningen, The Netherlands.

Khatt Books will officially launch its new book “Sculpting Type” with a presentation by the author, Edo Smitshuijzen, in which he will discuss what inspired this book, his research and experiments with software, machines and designs.

This book is an invitation for (graphic) designers to enter the 3D universe. Producing tangible stuff has never been easier. This territory is anxiously waiting for designers with graphic and communication skills to step in, dream away and explore a world that is much less ephemeral than their professional field. Their professional background may move traditional barriers and our environment may be enriched with tangible objects from a world of creation normally exposed in books, magazines, and on screens.

Check back on this and the Khatt Foundation websites for dates and venues of the book’s Middle Eastern tour, planned for end of 2013 – beginning of 2014.

The “Typographic Matchmaking in the City” project is a design research project investigating new approaches for bilingual lettering and poetic narrative for public space. The project have proven to be highly inspirational for the participating designers; it brought together designers from different cultural backgrounds to intensely collaborate, over a period of 2 years, on creating coherent products with groundbreaking results. This project shows the important role that design can play in initiating cultural change, assimilation and integration—by simply using our daily basic communication mode: the written word.

The book offers a brief range of essays that discuss the complex topic of public space from their respective authors’ individual experiences and perspectives. Through specific anecdotes, they elucidate the problems and implications of designing for “public space” and multicultural communities. These essays frame and contextualize the research and designs presented by the five teams participating in the Typographic Matchmaking in the City project. They briefly shed light on the function and role of text in architectural spaces, discussing specific historical and contemporary examples from cities like Beirut, Dubai, Muscat, Cairo, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and addressing the various roles of monumental typography in public space. discussing specific historical and contemporary examples from cities like Beirut, Dubai, Muscat, Cairo, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, and addressing the various roles of monumental typography in public space.
